Preparation
1 The Setup: Combine the simple syrup and both bitters in a mixing glass. We use a touch of orange bitters to highlight the citrus notes in the bourbon's finish.
2 The Pour: Add 2oz of Deep Bourbon. Adding the spirit before the ice ensures it incorporates fully with the sugar.
3 The Chill: Add ice to the mixing glass—filling it about three-quarters full. Stir smoothly for 30 seconds. The goal is to chill the drink down without watering it down too much.
4 The Serve: Strain into a heavy rocks glass over a single large cube. Express the orange peel over the glass to release the oils, rub it around the rim, and drop it in.
The Story
If you want to judge a whiskey, drink it neat. If you want to judge a bartender, order an Old Fashioned. It is the simplest cocktail in the canon, which means there is nowhere for poor ingredients to hide.
While many bars try to reinvent the wheel with muddled cherries or soda water, we believe the original 1800s recipe is still the superior code. This version relies on our Deep Bourbon. The "Sweet Oak" profile provides a natural vanilla backbone that pairs perfectly with the bitterness of the Angostura, creating a drink that is rich, round, and incredibly smooth.
