Preparation
1 The Ratio: This uses the classic 2:1 ratio. Combine the Deep Rye, sweet vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass.
2 Stir: Fill with ice and stir for 30–40 seconds. A Manhattan should be served "up" (without ice), so proper dilution in the mixing glass is critical to opening up the flavors.
3 Strain: Pour into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
4 Garnish: Drop in a high-quality brandied cherry (like Luxardo). Do not use the bright red sundae cherries—they are too sweet for this drink.
The Story
The Manhattan is the sophisticated older brother to the Old Fashioned. It swaps sugar for sweet vermouth, adding a layer of herbal complexity that demands a spirit with a backbone.
This is exactly what Deep Rye was engineered for. The high-rye mash bill provides a distinct "baking spice" and pepper profile that cuts right through the richness of the vermouth. Where a wheat whiskey might get lost in the mix, Deep Rye stands its ground, ensuring the finish is crisp, spicy, and dry rather than cloying.
